Materiality vs Image

Various authors

Materiality versus Image tells the story of Handle with care, a video installation created by the artistic duo MASBEDO entirely dedicated to the theme of image care and restoration.

The work was born from a long process that saw the artists working at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence and the Centro Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale” shooting a new video production. At Venaria Center – in collaboration with the museum of Reggia di Venaria Reale – the artists later presented a solo exhibition followed by a seminar entitled (Im)-materiality and identity. Art and its materials that saw the participation of artists, philosophers, critics and restorers discussing about the criteria of preservation, the appropriation of the archives and their memories by artists’ subjectivity.

For this reason the book is divided into two ‘acts’. The first part is dedicated to the work of MASBEDO, while the second part offers a series of different formats (artist images, posters, essay, critical interventions, dialogues and individual narration) giving a summary of the proceedings of the seminar, designed as a notebook of notes sketching out a broad, versatile, polyphonic panorama of the topic.
